Face Forward is a voluntary organisation which aims to support in Sri Lanka, patients suffering from Facial Deformity, Trauma and Cancer as well as their family.
Patients with facial problems are disadvantaged in any community. This is very much the case in Sri Lanka. The young and the old are affected. The structure of family life is such that often income is earned on a daily basis and so for them “time lost is money lost”. Patients and their family frequently need to travel and remain at the hospital whilst treatment is carried out. In some cases they may need to go to main cities for further treatment.
Face Forward aims to contribute to a significant improvement of the quality of life of these patients and their family.
The majority of these facial deformities and disorders are treatable.
Face Forward aims to convey this message to the communities and provide patients with the optimum care. A program of education advocating a healthy lifestyle and preventive measures will be delivered through health volunteers.
The majority of the operations are usually carried out in government hospitals; however the medical equipment there is often basic, particularly for the type of microsurgery required in the treatment of facial disorders.
Face Forward aims to support the provision of microsurgery instruments for facial reconstruction and to encourage research and training in co-operation with the UK based charity About Face (www.about-face.info ).
