     The new About Face Centre is soon to be open
              It is located at 111 Longfleet Road, nearly opposite Poole Hospital
The Centre will include meeting rooms for the Befriending support group and workshops, a relaxing space for patients and their friends and families, a surgical practice suite for trainee surgeons and the About Face office

        DID YOU KNOW?
Mouth Cancer is a malignant growth which can occur in any part of the mouth, including lips and tongue. Mouth cancer often appears as a painless mouth ulcer that does not heal normally or, less often, as a red or white patch in the mouth. Anyone can be affected, but smoking or chewing tobacco as well as heavy drinking greatly increase your risk of mouth cancer. Early detection is important.

       ABOUT FACE SUPPORTED HEAD & NECK SPECIALIST NURSE

       Specialist Nurse Sarah Morton was originally appointed in this most important role. She says:

"I took up the Head and Neck Specialist Nurse post at Poole Hospital NHS Trust at the end of June 2003. I had been working on the Ear, Nose and Throat and Maxillofacial surgical ward before that, as deputy to the ward sister and looked forward to the appointment of Specialist Nurse. My new role involves supporting people from diagnosis through their treatment for head and neck cancer, as well as liaising with care providers in the community and some audit, education and research. At the moment, we are involved in a project looking at the quality of life and how different treatments affect it.
The past eighteen months have been extremely varied and I have been pleased to receive encouraging feedback from patients and fellow team members alike. A particular encouragement was that the role has contributed to an improvement in the care offered to our patient group, which remains a priority."

ABOUT FACE has launched THE BUTTERFLY APPEAL
The Appeal is a major fund-raising initiative aiming to support the creation of a Centre for About Face. The Centre will include a surgical practice suite, a state of the art medical research support facility, a meeting room for patients and families, and short-term accommodation for visiting trainee surgeons.
